How to Get Rid of Ganglion Cyst

Ganglion cysts are common lumps normally found in the hands and wrist. The cause is unknown although they usually form on areas of a joint or tendon. There are theories suggesting that the cause of ganglion cyst is the tissue of the joint that breaks down into smaller pieces that will join a larger mass. Ganglion cysts are considered non cancerous and will not spread to other areas of the body. They are made up of sticky, clear, colorless and jellylike material. They normally change in size or disappear completely. The case may be serious but here are some things we could do to avoid this kind of problem:

Immobilizing the cysts

If the ganglion cyst will increase in size then it will cause pain whenever there are movements of the hands.  Wrist splint can be worn to immobilize the area if the cysts decrease its size. This procedure will help to rest the hands and will also help to reduce the size of the cysts. This can be done before considering surgery or aspiration. There are cases that require immobilizing the cyst ten days prior to surgery.

Get rid of repetitive hand motion

This kind of cysts normally occur to people who perform repetitive activities using their hands like milkers, weight lifters, tennis and golf players and guitarist. Avoiding the said activities can help to decrease the size of the mass and relieve pain.

Aspiration

This method involves draining the fluid from the cyst. The physician will apply a local anesthesia above the cysts then punctures it with the use of a needle. Syringe will be used to drain fluid from the base. The method is very simple and can be done in the doctor’s clinic.

Get a professional opinion

There really isn’t much that you can do at home to get rid of a ganglion cyst.  What you’re going to want to do is set up an appointment with your doctor.  He/she is going to be able to conduct an X ray or Ultrasound to diagnose the problem.  Since there can be different kinds, the doctor will be able to pinpoint the exact issue, and figure out an alternative solution.

Surgery

The surgeon will recommend surgery if the ganglion cysts cause pain and difficulty of hand movement. Commonly, surgery on ganglion cysts are done in out patient department so you will not be staying in the hospital for 24 hours or more. There would be an incision made by the doctor to remove the cysts and stalk that goes with the tendon or joint.

Don’t attempt the book method

Many swear by hitting the cyst with a book.  While the method can work, the chances of it happening are rather slim.  The other thing that people recommend is that you cut it open with something sharp from home.  Not only could this effect the area, it can do a lot more damage than good.   The lesson here is to make sure that consult with a professional, before trying it at home.

Aspiration

Ganglion cysts are noncancerous fluid-filled protuberances that usually emerge around the joints or tendons of a person’s hands or wrists, and at times close to the feet part.

Aspiration entails draining the fluid from the cyst. The doctor injects a local anesthesia over the cyst, and then pricks using a needle. A syringe is then utilized to drain the fluid from the bottom of the cyst. The process is quite easy and can be administered within the doctor’s clinic. Research shows that up to 74% of the cases where successfully treated through aspiration. Yet cysts may reappear after some time. The recurrence rate for aspiration can actually reach up to 80%. You can have the procedure done again in case of recurrence. Studies prove that having the fluid drawn out thrice raises the chance of getting well to 85%.
