How to Get Rid of Inflamed Taste Buds

Our taste buds are composed of a totally different kind of muscle fibers. They are present on our tongue’s surface which allows us to distinguish the different taste of our food. Normally, out tongue is divided into five oral portions so that we can still differentiate the different tastes when we eat. The five portions are sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami or what is commonly known as savoury.

When our taste buds get irritated or have nutrient deficiency, it can get swollen and our sense of taste gets affected too. It is usually caused by eating foods that are extremely hot and spicy foods, when it is exposed to toxins like alcohol and tobacco smoking, allergies, infections or vitamin deficiency. When this happens, the swelling will present a small and whitish spots. In some cases, when this inflammation is not taken care of, it can lead to complications like mouth ulcers. Here are some tips on how to get rid of inflamed taste buds.

Warm saline solution

A warm saline solution has been very effective to relieve any soreness in our mouth. Just prepare warm water and make sure that the water is at bearable temperature range. Add salt and mix it a little. Gargle with the saline mixture 2 to 3 times a day or as often as you can. Just remember to test and check the water’s temperature first. If the water is too warm, it might aggravate the present condition.

Gargle with salt water or tea tree oil

Salt has natural elements that can help alleviate inflamed taste buds symptom. Simply create a solution out of half a teaspoon of salt and about a cup of warm water. Take one mouthful of the solution and gargle it inside your mouth for about 30 seconds. Repeat this several times until your taste buds go back to its normal form.

Tea tree oil is said to be effective in curing inflamed taste buds. It has natural properties that soothe your tongue and relieve the inflamed taste buds.

Baking soda

This is known to be a cooling agent thus it can also promote healing to your inflamed taste buds. All you have to do is to apply a pinch or baking soda to the affected area. Repeat this twice a day and remember to rinse you mouth first before doing this. It will soothe the pain and eventually treats the inflammation.


This is a perfect remedy especially if you are experiencing burning sensation. Ice provides instant pain relief and it can also reduce the swelling. Just press gently a piece of ice against the swollen area until you feel a soothing relief. Do not apply too much force by pushing it hard because it might hinder blood flow in your tongue.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is known to be an effective in treating bacterial, viral and fungal infections. So if you see any white spots on your tongue, you can gargle a diluted form of tea tree oil at least 3 times a day. Never swallow this solution as it may cause temporary hallucinations.

Honey or glycerin

Now, after doing the home remedies and you can observe that the swelling is starting to heal, gently apply honey or glycerin on the affected parts. This will promote faster healing.

Observe proper hygiene

Most inflamed taste buds will go away within just a short span of time. It is best to just leave them alone as inflamed taste buds are most likely to return to their original form. While waiting for your inflamed taste buds to heal, you can just observe proper hygiene. Brush your teeth, cheeks, gums and tongue after eating. You should also use mild mouthwash. If your mouth is clean, there will be fewer bacteria that can aggravate your inflamed taste buds. Do not rub the inflamed taste buds harshly as it may lead to infection.
