How To Get Rid Of Wet Towel Smell

When you have finished taking a bath, you use a towel to absorb the water in your skin and hair. But sometimes, if the towel fails to dry, an unpleasant odor may start to emit from it. Damp towels are house for molds, mildew and lots of other bacteria. That is why, if you just leave the towel that you have used unclean and wet, it may start to develop an unwanted smell. Towels are used in keeping your body clean and dry, but what if the towel you are using starts to get smelly and dirty?

Wet towel smell is actually quite common. When you take a bath in the morning and you are already late for school or work, you may be most likely to just leave your towel on the floor or on the bed. This bad habit may cause for it to smell. The worse thing is that when the wet towel gets in touch with other fabrics like your bed sheet, the wet towel smell might even spread. So if you are facing the problem brought about by wet towel smell, here are some things you can do to get rid of it.

Launder as usual

When your towel is already smelly, then it is time for it to be washed. If the smell is not too strong, you can just launder it as usual. Place your towel on the washing machine and pour the right amount of liquid detergent. Let the washing machine run until it has fully cleaned the towel. Rinse it with clean water and then hang outside to dry. It is best if you hang it when the sun is up so that the sun’s heat will bleach the towel naturally.

Use fabric conditioner

If the wet towel smell did not go away after washing, you can use fabric conditioner afterwards. You can get this at almost any grocery shop. Simply follow the directions on the label to know how to use fabric conditioner. Note that you should never mix fabric conditioner together with laundry detergent as it may create unwanted streaks on your towel.

Wash with hot water and baking soda

If plain washing your towel is not enough to get rid of the wet towel smell, you can use hot water and baking soda mixture to remove the unwanted odor. Simply heat up some water and pour it in a basin. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on the water and let it dissolve. Then, place the towel on the mixture. Let the towel soak for about an hour or until the smell goes away. Afterwards, you can just wash the towel with water and laundry detergent.

Soak with vinegar

Vinegar is also powerful in removing wet towel smell. It removes not only the wet towel smell, but also the bacteria. Just mix equal amounts of vinegar and water together. Then submerge the towel in this solution. After a couple of minutes have passed, launder the towel normally.

Rub some lemon

Lemon has the same effect like vinegar. Although it is best used on white towels only as lemon have the tendency to lighten up fabrics. Simple wash the towel in clean water first. Then, cut a lemon into two. Use the cut lemon to rub the entire towel. Leave for a few minutes then launder normally.
