How To Get Rid of Carpet Smell
Carpets can always brighten a certain room. It serves as a decoration and adds a comfortable feel to your home. However, because of the carpeting materials, your carpet may gain an unwelcoming smell over time. If it is not properly cleaned and maintained, foul odor will stick to carpet fibers making it smell horrible.

Use baking soda
When it comes to removing unwanted odors in your home, baking soda is one of the top homemade remedies. It contains chemicals that can neutralize household smell. To apply baking soda, just mix some tablespoons of baking soda with water. Apply this all over both sides of the carpet. Make sure that there is no uncovered space. After you have finished applying the baking soda solution, wash the carpet with soap and water. Let it air dry, but do not place directly under the sun’s heat. After the carpet has dried out, check if the odor has gone away. If not, you can try sprinkling baking soda on the carpet and use a vacuum to take the residue away. Aside from carpet smell, baking soda can also remove carpet stains.
Spray some acids
Like baking soda, vinegar is one of the top home solutions to many household problems. Vinegar contains high amount of acid. Its concentrated contents can kill bacteria that cause the bad smell of the carpet. Although vinegar can also smell during the process, it can bring good results afterwards. Simply mix vinegar and water in a one is to three ratios. Use brush or washcloth, dip into the solution and rub it all around the carpet surface. Then, wash the carpet until the sour smell of the vinegar has gone away with the foul carpet smell. Hang outside and let it air dry.
Like vinegar, lemon also contains acids that can help remove that carpet smell. Although lemon is not as acidic as vinegar, it is enough to get rid of that annoying carpet smell. Lemon also has a more pleasant odor than vinegar so if you want your carpet to have that fresh lemony smell, you can opt to use lemon instead of vinegar. Just simply make some lemon juice with water and apply it on the carpet. Wash with soap and rinse with water. Place outside to dry.
If these simple home remedies did not work, there are commercial carpets cleaning products that you can buy in the market. There are professional carpet foam cleaners, steam cleaners and carpet deodorizer. You can just follow the product instruction and within minutes, carpet smell will be taken away. Air freshener can also lighten up the carpet smell for a bit. Although this may not really take away the carpet smell directly, it can cover the foul smell coming from the carpet for a while. You can also use air freshener to kill aerial bacteria that may stick to the carpet fibers.
New carpet pad
If you cannot afford a new carpet, you can just buy a new carpet pad. Replacing carpet pad may require some time and patience but it will be worth it once you have fully reinstalled a new carpet pad. Not only will the carpet smell go away, your carpet will also improve in a lot of ways.
