How To Get Rid of Cat Bad Breath
Everyone loves to play with cats. They are fun and lively. But if your cat has a bad breath, then fun will be no more. Cat bad breath can throw people off. It is just plain nasty. While this may be only caused by the food they eat and improper hygiene, cat bad breath can also be a sign of a more serious disease.
Whether it is just a temporary or serious illness, your cat bad breath should be treated as soon as possible. If you have a cat in your home that emits smelly breath, here are some things you can do in order to get rid of cat bad breath.
Same with humans and other animals, proper hygiene can remove cat bad breath. Always remember to clean your cat and brush its teeth regularly. The odor coming from your cat’s mouth may be just because of the bacteria that has build-up on its teeth. Tartar and plaque are common in cats whose teeth are not brushed and cleaned regularly. You can always get a small toothbrush or a dental sponge; the one used by kids, and brush your cat’s teeth with regular toothpaste.
Breath mints and treats
There are some products that you can give your cat to freshen its breath. Breath mints and treats are available at pet stores. These cat breath fresheners are not like mouthwash or mint candies, they actually taste like liver or meat but contain chlorophyll that improves cat’s breath.
Change your cat’s diet
Cat bad breath may be caused by the food that your pet eats. Cats love milk but milk can cause bad breath, so whenever you provide your pet with milk, make sure to give it water as well.Avoid giving your cat too much sugar. This is bad for its health and can even cause bad breath. Fish is also a no-no although cats love it.
Some veterinarians are still debating whether meat can cause bad breath for cats or not. Originally, it was thought to promote unwanted breath odor but recently, there are some veterinarian who are claiming that meat is good for cats and can help discourage bad breath.
If you are not sure what to feed them, just stay away from wet foods and those which do not smell great in general. There are commercial cat food products that are fresh-breath friendly. You can always opt to buy these. Feeding catnip to your cats can also freshen their breath because catnip is a kind of mint plant.
Like dogs, cats can also be provided with chew toy or just leftover chicken bones. This will exercise their teeth, gums and jaw bones. Chewing will help produce more saliva which helps in killing bacteria and removing tartar and other food residue in your pet’s teeth.
Take it to the vet
Cat bad breath is not to be ignored. If you observe that, other than bad breath, there is something different about your cat’s disposition, and then take it straight to the pet clinic. Cat bad breath can be a sign of illnesses such as diabetes, organ disease, stomatitis and even tumor that can lead to your cat’s death if left untreated. If you do not know what to do to get rid of cat bad breath, then you can ask for help of a veterinarian.
