How to Get Rid of Itchy Eyes

Itchy eyes can be very irritating and can bother you the whole day. Most of the time, we don’t find the courage of avoiding to scratch it—so it ends up to e more itchy and more irritated. The two major causes of itchy eyes are allergies and eye irritation. Allergies may pertain to certain allergens such as pollens, food, animal dander, cosmetics or any cleaning products. Irritations may fall under circumstances like dirty hands or handkerchief that you used to wipe your eyes, often usage of contact lenses and long periods of time in front of the television or computer screen.

Treatments for itchy eyes are very simple to do. However, the very first thing that you have to detect is of it is allergy related cause or just irritation. There will be different approaches for each one of them.

Allergy related

Knowing the trigger is equivalent to knowing what to avoid. If it just hay fever or some sort, it is very easy to avoid. However, if you have no idea what kind of allergen it is, you can keep a diary of the food you eat, things you had contact with and the like.

For allergies, antihistamine is the only remedy for you as this is a medical condition already. You can purchase over the counter antihistamine drugs or you can ask your doctor to give you a specific prescription that you can use every time. Zaditor is an antihistamine eye drop that you can use.


Our eyes are naturally wet so it can actually shake off some of the dirt that tries to go inside. However, it is not capable of protecting itself from irritants all the time. So if you feel like your eyes are starting to itch, here are a few remedies.

Wash the corners

Take a cold washcloth and wash the corners or your eyes.  You’ll want to make sure that you avoid washing your eye directly.  Be sure to use cold water and rub softly.  By doing this, this is going to help remove any oils that can be causing your eyes to itch.

Visit your ophthalmologist

There are really some instances that you may not find relief in all the remedies. This is the perfect time to have a check up. Remember that your eyes are very sensitive and are very vital to us. So if you feel like there is a need for you to see a specialist, don’t ever think twice.
