Ketosis is a condition related to high levels of ketones in the blood. Ketones are water soluble chemical compounds that resulted from fat metabolism. Ketosis is a part of metabolism wherein fat is broken down to use for energy. Ketones are normal substances in the body, but being in a stage of ketosis is a different thing because it can result to a serious condition later on.

Normally, the body needs glucose to sustain its energy requirements. People who are following a ketogenic diet, the body have to use the stored fat instead for acquiring energy. Therefore the body produces energy through the use of ATP together with molecules called ketones.
