How To Get Rid Of Mayflies

Living near fresh lakes may be very relaxing but there are also times when you will have a hard time appreciating this natural view. Places near lakes are prone to invasion of mayflies. Mayflies are one of the most widespread insects that hover around lake areas. Mayflies are not really harmful creatures, but they can be bothersome if a big swarm of mayflies fly around your area.

Mayflies do not become a big deal until they come in large groups. If you are one of those people who are constantly bugged by flying mayflies, unfortunately, you have limited options in getting rid of them. This is because there are not much mayfly removal techniques that have been formulated because they are not considered a major disturbance in most places. Nevertheless, you can still take steps that can help limit their number so you can go outside your house and enjoy the lake view. If you want to get rid of mayflies, here are some things that you can do.

Remove standing water

Mayflies greatly depend on water, which is why they are found in lake areas. Although you cannot really do anything about the water in the lake, at least, you can do something with standing water in your lot. Remove any standing water from your home, as mayflies lay their eggs in water. The lesser the water resource is, the lesser mayflies there will be. Also, you should ensure the cleanliness of your lot so that they mayflies will be discouraged from visiting your home.

Kill the lights

Mayflies are attracted to well-lit places. If you notice that mayflies keep on swarming in your area, you should turn off the lights when not needed. It might also be a good idea to turn off all the lights during the whole night. If in case your neighbor kept your light on, the mayflies will most probably go to their place instead of yours.

Work with garlic

Garlic tea is one of the homemade solutions that you can use to shoo away those mayflies. Simply boil some crushed garlic and water together. Be sure that you use a lot of garlic because the stronger the garlic tea is, the more potent it will be in fending off those invasive mayflies. When you have finished making the garlic tea, transfer it to bottle sprays and start spraying your lot with it.

Aside from garlic tea, you can simply scatter dried garlic bits around your whole lot. For every 1,000 square feet of land, you need around five pounds of dry minced garlic.

Use a bug fogger

A bug fogger works almost every time with insect and bug problems. If you live in a place that is constantly visited by insects such as mayflies, it might be a good idea to invest on a bug fogger. You can purchase them in almost any hardware store. However, if you do not have enough money, you can just borrow a bug fogger from a friend. Follow the instructions on how to use it and you will be able to get rid of those mayflies in no time.

Let them die

The good thing about mayflies is that their lifespan is actually shorter than other invasive insects. If you cannot get rid of the mayflies, you should just wait until the break out subsides. If they still linger after about a week, you can call for extra help.
