How to Get Rid of Sponge Smell
You may not even have given it a thought but the sponge can be one of the most abused home cleaning items in your house. Imagine this; they are rubbed against plates and other surfaces which can be filled with bacteria. Bacteria can cause foul odor and it’s not surprising that this smell is transferred to the sponge.
About a week or two after you first used your sponge; you will notice that they would start smelling bad. There can be stains on there too just to add to the grossness. The worst part is when you touch it, it also feels uncomfortable. Bad bacteria cause this smell and aside from the smell, the bacteria can be transferred to the surface that you are cleaning which can be ironic.
Harboring bacteria on your sponge may be accidental but the danger it poses is not. There are other things that you need to consider aside from the smell. But when dealing with bacteria present in the sponge, you deal with the smell as well. To get rid of sponge smell, you can follow the following instructions:
Wash the sponge thoroughly after using
It may be a simple statement but there is more to just rinsing the sponge with water when cleaning it. Cleaning should be done thoroughly and with care. Do not throw your sponge after just one use if it gets soiled.
After you have used it on food particles, make sure that you remove all of the visible food fragments that have stuck on the sponge. Scrape it off or you can also run water through it. But it doesn’t stop there. The key is to disinfect the sponge after cleaning and washing it. Put few drops of bleach, which has great anti bacterial component. Rinse the sponge thoroughly with water until the traces of bleach have been removed.
Again, it doesn’t stop here since the sponge is still wet and one of the factors that allow bacterial spread is moisture. Dry out the sponge in a container that will drain the liquid remaining in the sponge.
Microwave oven can be used to sanitize the sponge
Microwave oven can be used as a cleaning agent aside from being one of the most used cooking appliances in your house. The method doesn’t just involve putting your sponge in the microwave and turning it on. There is a process that you need to follow to make it successful. Wash the sponge with water but do not allow it to dry. Place the sponge inside the microwave for about 2 minutes max. If you doubt this method, get this, the USDA has proven that microwaving the sponge reduces the population of bacteria more than other methods. This will guarantee that the smell will be gone as well.
Use natural cleaning methods
Baking soda and vinegar can also help clean and at the same time disinfect your sponge preventing the spread of bacteria. First, you need to soak the sponge in vinegar mixed with baking soda. You can choose to soak the sponge overnight, making sure that you are done using them before you consider soaking it.
The next day, you should wash the sponge with soap and water. Make sure that you follow cleaning and drying procedures when washing them to make sure that the bacteria is not given the chance to multiply again. Repeat this procedure at least 3 times a week as a maintenance for the sponge.
