How to Get Rid of Squirrels

Different kinds of animals have co existed with humans all throughout time in memorial. There are animals such as dogs and cats that can keep us company as pets. While there are other types of pet that are best kept inside a cage. This is not something done to torture these animals, this is done because once they are left in the wild they well…get wild.

Take squirrels as an example. These are cute, cuddly and fun loving creatures that are very active. Out in the open, their characteristics suit their environment. But if they accidentally get in your house, you’d better start figuring out a way to get rid of them. Squirrel inside a house spells disaster. They can cause damage to your property and would likely live in your basement, attic or even cupboards.

They also bring nesting materials inside the house and would make noises when they are scurrying around. There are several reasons why squirrels should be taken out of the house. To help you with this task, here are some of the things that you can do. These methods are designed to get rid of squirrels without harming them:

You can trap squirrels using live traps

Squirrels are very active animals and it can be hard to catch them by running after them. The best way to capture them is by using live traps. Squirrels can be trapped in small sized steel cages and can be safely relocated afterwards. There is a reason why you need to use smaller sized traps, squirrels can still run around bigger traps, banging their heads and injuring themselves in the process.

When setting up traps; find the entry areas such as doors and pipes and place the traps in these areas. Try to find traces of squirrels such as food residue that they may have left. You can also attract them using bait such as nuts placed inside the traps.

Keep your yard clean

There are several ways to prevent a squirrel from being attracted to your house. But the very first thing that you need to do is keep your yard clean at all times. If any squirrel sees food residue or trash cans left uncovered, they will see this as an open invitation to your house. Make sure that you clean up your yard and cover trash cans. Place the trash in bags that can be sealed tightly before putting it inside the trash cans.

Repel them

There are several products designed to repel squirrels that you can buy in the market. These repellents can be sprinkled or sprayed around your house. There are repellents that can be hung in areas where squirrels may use to enter your property.

The best way to repel them though is by sealing off possible entry points into your house. If you have pipes and chimneys, make sure that you seal them using wire fence so the some and water can still go through.

Introduce a natural predator

Squirrels, like other animals, are often hunted by predators. This is the natural course of life. So it wouldn’t be a bad idea to purchase a cat and keep them as pet. Cats are agile creatures and great hunters. They will be able to detect presence of unwanted visitors such as squirrels and chase them off your property. The squirrels safety is not guaranteed, but that is part of nature running its course.
