How to Get Rid of Tension

As we get older, more is expected of us and the more responsibilities are entrusted to us – by our family, by our jobs and even our communities. So many things to do and many remain unfinished. And one by one these little responsibilities pile up until it becomes bigger than us. Suddenly we experience frequent headaches, sleepless nights and we feel so stressed out. And this does not cause only physical illness but emotional strife as well.

Follow these simple steps and be able to feel better – emotionally, mentally and physically.

Take deep breaths

We can usually tell when tension is slowly increasing in our body.  Stop whatever you are doing since chances are you wouldn’t be able to work efficiently.  Close your eyes, relax and breathe in deeply, hold your breath for a few seconds then breathe out.   Repeat a couple of times. Aside from the relaxation it provides us, good oxygen supply to the brain has an important effect in clear thinking. Make it a habit to do this every day before going to work.  It will help you start the days right.

Limit your caffeine intake

Drinking coffee may actually worsen the tension in our body since too much intake triggers anxiety.  Caffeine is actually known to increase our adrenaline. It will provide us with an initial energy rush but afterwards you are likely to feel extreme fatigue and even mild depression.  Also, it interferes with the absorption of adenosine – the calming hormone. Instead, opt for water or a healthier drink like leamonade.

Body Massage

Studies shows that massage can relieve everyday stress.  Why not indulge yourself in full body massage complete with aromatherapy that will surely relax your mind and body.  The tension that built up in your muscles will lessen and you will feel rejuvenated.  It will not only benefit you physically but mentally as well.

Spoil yourself occasionally

Sometimes you just need to spend some money on the things you really enjoy.  Whether you buy yourself a new outfit, grab a coffee after work, or you even buy yourself some beautiful flowers, taking time to make sure you’re happy is important.  Not to mention, seeing a beautiful bouquet of flowers can help get rid of tension.

Talk things over with a friend

Talking things over with a friend sometimes gets everything in the right perspective. Thru verbally unloading all the worries, it actually unloads also the stress that comes with it.  And we suddenly would feel how little and how easy our problems are to be solved.  Do however avoid going to a pessimist person. Make sure that you choose the right person who can help you feel better and not worse.

Take a break

All work and no play lead to stress. One should always make sure that work-life balance is always established. Once in a while, go out and have fun. Take a vacation with your family, go to the movies friends or drive to the country and listen to good music.  Do what you want to enjoy and forget about work for a moment.  Afterwards, you will feel re energized and ready to work again.
