How to Get Rid of TMJ

What is TMJ? TMJ is a disease that is associated with your jaw system. The temporomandibular joint or TMJ connects the lower jaw bone to the temporal bone on each side of the human skull. It works with the muscles attached to it to control jaw movement. When problems arise in the jaw area, temporomandibular joint disorder can occur.  It is a painful disorder that can cause you great discomfort.  It is usually associated with the dislocation of the jaw area and the connecting joints.  Thus having it can cause you lots of pain.  There are several symptoms of TMJ, which can help you diagnose it and thus seek the appropriate treatment.

What are the common symptoms?

When the muscles in the TMJ joint are impaired, the individual may experience headaches that are unexplained. There can also be many other symptoms that can occur as well. You may experience pain and tenderness in the muscles of your jaw. You might notice that when you awaken in the morning, the pain is more severe. The pain can also be more severe after chewing. You can find that symptoms include problems in opening and closing the jaw. If the situation is severe enough, you might even experience a locking of the jaws. Avoid chewing hard

It is also important for those with TMJ to take care regarding the foods you eat. Avoid chewing hard foods. Try not to chew gum for long periods of time. Cut your food into small bites or eat a diet based on soft foods.

Yawning

It can affect your jaw so when you yawn, make it a point not to open your mouth too widely.

Massage Jaw

It can also be helpful to massage the jaw muscles from time to time. If you are in pain, this may provide relief. You might also find that pressing a warm compress on the jaw muscles can help to ease pain as well. Patients who experience from bruxism, or teeth grinding, may need to be fitted with a special mouth guard that can be worn at night to absorb forces that are used by the teeth.
