How To Get Rid of Bloodshot Eyes

Do your eyes appear like they are owned by a vampiric creature? Do they seem to be burning red? If you do not take good care of your eyes, you will be vulnerable to eye infections like bloodshot eyes.

There are many things that cause bloodshot eyes. It may be because of eye strain, lack of sleep, allergic reaction, harmful chemicals around and even the weather. Bloodshot eyes may not hurt too badly but they should be treated for you to be more comfortable. Here are some things you can do to get rid of bloodshot eyes.

Wash your face with warm water

If you have been in front of the computer or television for a couple of hours without breaks, you are risking yourself to get eyestrain which is commonly associated with bloodshot eyes. If this is your case and no other complication is felt such as itchiness or watery eyes, then simply washing your face with warm water may help lessen the redness of your eyes.

Of course, the longer you put warmth on your face and eyes, the better the effect will be. You can also try soaking a small towel in warm water and placing it over your eyes for a couple of minutes. Repeat if necessary.

Splash cold water

For bloodshot eyes that are accompanied by itchiness, then instead of using warm water, go for cold water. Bloodshot eyes are commonly caused by allergic reactions. If you are sure that no gadgets are responsible for your bloodshot eyes, it is possible that you are under attack by allergens. Simply splash your face with cold water or apply cold compress over your eyes. This will help constrict the blood vessels around your eyes that are being irritated by allergens. Leave it to work for a couple of minutes until you feel comfort and your eyes look less red.

Take antihistamine

If you are experiencing bloodshot eyes because of allergic reaction, you can also take antihistamine to make your recovery faster. Antihistamine is available even without medical prescription. You can buy them over-the-counter in most drugstores.

Apply eye drops

Eye drops can instantly help relieve bloodshot eyes and many other eye irritations. These eye drops are specifically designed in order to treat the eyes. To get rid of bloodshot eyes, simply apply about two to three drops of this medicated solution over your eyes. You will almost instantly feel the result after using eye drops. However, if you often use eye drops, then your eyes might stop reacting to its healing properties. Also, do not use too much eye drops as it contains chemicals that are not too friendly to the eyes when used repeatedly.

Go to an eye doctor

Bloodshot eyes usually go away after just a couple of hours. If your bloodshot eyes keeps on coming back or lasts for more than two to three days and they feel irritated, you should go to an eye doctor right away and get examined. The doctor will also be the one to provide you with the treatments that you need. While it may be more costly to get a checkup than to do home remedies, it is safer to leave the treatment to a professional eye doctor.

Keep your eye healthy

In order to prevent getting bloodshot eyes in the future, remember to keep your eyes away from strain. If using the computer, use protective eyeglasses or cover your monitor with screen protector. You should also avoid watching the TV too closely. Eat eye-friendly foods and let your eyes get enough rest every day.
