So you’ve had a good meal and you are finally just rubbing your stomach from the satisfaction of the meal you just had. Suddenly you feel the need to go to the restroom as your stomach aches and you just want to get rid of what you just ate. May it be vomiting or diarrhea, you can consider yourself lucky if this is the only thing that happens to you. These are clear indication that you’ve had food poisoning.
Food poisoning is usually caused by mishandling of the food that we eat. Cooking does not automatically kill off the bacteria in food which is the main cause of food poisoning. If food is not kept within a safe holding temperature, the bacteria spread at a very fast rate. When this happens, the chances of getting food poisoned are high.
Food poisoning can be averted if people would put more care in handling their food. There are plenty of ways to prevent the spread of bacteria that causes food poisoning. Below you will find some of the most effective ways to prevent food poisoning:
Prepare food items cleanly
When preparing food we may be using the same chopping board for different food items. Let’s say you chop meat, vegetables and seafood on the same chopping board. This can get the bacteria from one food item to another or what is more popularly known as cross contamination.
When dealing with different food ingredients, make sure that your kitchen is cleaned, wiped down and if possible, sanitized. Use different chopping boards for different food items or wash down the chopping board after every use.
Store food items properly
You probably don’t have to think about it hard as to why we refrigerate most food items in our house. Just try leaving that opened cream in room temperature for a few hours and you will come up with a pile of stinky goo. Bacteria thrive in temperatures that range from 41 to 140 degree Fahrenheit which translates to room temperature.
Any food exposed to a room within this temperature is in danger of becoming contaminated. Make sure that you refrigerate or freeze food items that you are not about to cook. For cooked food, you can also put leftover in the refrigerator to prevent the spread of bacteria. You may also want to store dry food in air tight containers to prevent the spread of bacteria.
Buy fresh ingredients
When choosing ingredients for your dish, nothing beats fresh. Fresh ingredients will guarantee that the food you are cooking will be delicious and free from bacteria. Buying from a trusted source also guarantees that these ingredients were handled and stored properly; minimizing the chance for bacterial growth. Make sure that meats are inspected by certified meat inspectors; they usually have a seal on the meat for approval. For canned goods, buy them if the expiry date is ways off especially if you will be stocking them in your pantry.
Eat food on time
There is a reason why food items we purchase from grocery stores have expiration date on them. This is the period when the food is best consumed as the quality diminishes over time. Make sure that before the food item reaches its expiration date, you should consume it. The effects of the ingredients that preserve the food will wear off and when this happens the food will no longer be safe to eat.
