How to Get Rid of Horse Dandruff

Dandruff has been a common problem for most humans, it is itchy and irritating and at the same time it can be embarrassing. Although this is common for humans, animals also get this skin condition, animal like horses. Horses have hair as well which is called the mane and since dandruff usually occurs on the scalp, they are expected to have this under that big mane of theirs.

Horse dandruff, like dandruff occurring to humans is caused by dead skin cells which flakes off and would eventually fall off in form of dandruff. There are underlying causes that can exacerbate the condition. These conditions are hormonal issues, fungal infection as well as eczema. Horses are animals exposed to extreme conditions of the sun and extreme heat and seasonal changes can cause dandruff.

Dandruff cannot be removed overnight and constant treatment is necessary to prevent re-occurrence of the condition. First, you need to make the condition manageable before you can totally remove it. There are several products and habits that you need to apply to the horse to get rid of horse dandruff; you can follow the procedures which will help you in removing horse dandruff:

Proper showering

Constant showering is necessary to maintain the cleanliness of the horse. However, proper procedures for showering are necessary to make sure that the scalp is well cleaned. First, you need to be sure that you wet the horse’s mane with lukewarm water as hot or cold water can complicate the condition. Lukewarm water allows just the right temperature to prevent dryness of the scalp that exacerbates the dandruff.

Use oatmeal horse shampoo

There are several horse mane products that you can use to treat dandruff as well. Oatmeal horse shampoo can be used which can provide nutrients to the scalp of the horse. Apply generously and gently rub to the scalp of the horse. Let the hair soak for about 2 to 3 minutes to allow the shampoo to concentrate and work effectively. To prevent irritation, you should rinse the hair with lukewarm water and remove any residue of the shampoo.

Brush the hair constantly

While drying the hair off, you should constantly brush the hair of the horse. This performs two purposes since dandruff that clings on the hair would fall off while it also massages the scalp of the horse. Massaging the scalp allows for better blood circulation in the head; this helps prevent dandruff from getting them.

Moisturize the scalp

Since dandruff is caused by dry skin in the scalp, it needs to be moisturized constantly. Products such as spray on conditioner would also help in keeping the scalp moisturized. One product that is popular with horses, as a matter of fact it can be used by humans as well is Mane and Tail.
