How to Get Rid of Post Nasal Drip

It is normal for our mucus membranes to produce mucus each day, after all this is what this organ is supposed to do. As a matter of fact, the mucus membranes produce up to 2 quarts of mucus per day. We normally do not feel this, although if the mucus membrane produces more than the usual amount of mucus, our body would respond to it naturally. The condition when the mucus membrane produces excessive amounts of mucus is called post nasal drip.

Post nasal drip leads to coughing as well as sore throat, what’s worse is that this condition can lead to halitosis which can turn other people off. Also, post nasal drip is believed to be caused by allergies. Post nasal drip can be mistaken as a single condition, but it is actually usually paired with other conditions such as coughing and symptoms usually include having bad taste in your mouth.

Like any other ailments, post nasal drip should be treated immediately as it can cause great inconvenience and can lead to more serious ailments. A visit to the doctor usually starts off the treatment since you need to make sure that you take the right type of medicines. Some of the other things that you can do to get rid of post nasal drip is listed below:

Increase Vitamin C intake

Our immune system acts as the defense system of our body. When we get cold and flu, our immune system weakens. It is likened to a squad of solider that is outnumbered by the enemies. You may wonder how to build up your forces to prevent acquiring different ailments. The simple answer is to increase your Vitamin C intake.

Citrus fruits are rich in Vitamin C; oranges and lemons are just some of the fruits that you can eat to improve your body’s natural defense. If you don’t feel like eating fruits, you can take vitamin supplements or simply drink your orange juice.

Avoid irritants

Irritants can trigger allergic reaction and each person may have a unique irritant that can cause post nasal drip. Most irritants enter the nose and some of the substances that can cause post nasal drip are smoke, perfume, and car exhaust. If you feel that you succumb easily to these substances, you can wear mask whenever you go out.

Take medications

There are several types of medicines that you can take to get rid of post nasal drip. When our body detects allergens, it releases natural chemicals called histamine and this causes cough and colds. You may have heard of medicines known as anti histamines and it seems obvious that the name of the medicine counteracts the effects of histamine. Anti histamine medicines can be purchased over the counter and are best given prior to the exposure to allergens. Make sure that you consult a doctor first since the medicine may react differently depending on the person who takes it.

Allergy shots and immunotherapy

Our body develops antibodies that block the effects of allergens. There are instances when the antibodies are not fully developed and their effect against allergens become minimal. The role of allergy shots includes making the allergens’ effect less reactive to the body. Another way to manage allergens is by undergoing immunotherapy. This procedure is performed by exposing the body to the allergens that affect the person until it fully develops the antibodies required to combat post nasal drip.
