How To Get Rid Of Retainer Pain

Teeth problems are quite common. That is why there are many treatments formulated by the dentist to correct these problems. Aside from the usual tooth decay, bad breath, gingivitis, and the like, another common teeth problem is unaligned teeth. To solve this problem, there is the very common brace treatment. Braces are used to correct overbite, under bite and crooked teeth.

The use of brace treatment is very common, especially with children and teens. For those who have undergone their brace treatment, you might probably remember how painful it is to have wires fixed to your teeth and gums. After the brace treatment has been finished, you might feel like letting out a big sigh of relief. However, this is not particularly true with those people who have to wear retainer after years of wearing braces. Retainer is a device that is worn in order to keep the teeth in place after realigning them. Same with braces, wearing retainer can be painful. Here are some tips on how to get rid of retainer pain.

Gargle with warm salt water

When it comes to pain in tongue, cheeks and gums, warm salt water always works. Simply warm up a cup of water and add about a teaspoon of salt to it. Let the salt dissolve and then gargle with this solution. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water a few times a day or whenever the pain attacks. This will alleviate the pain that you feel in your mouth.

Gargle with cold water

If warm salt water did not work, try gargling with cold water. The cool temperature can give you that numbing effect, hence the temporary relief from pain. Simply get some water and add some ice cubes to it. Let the ice melt and then gargle. Do this as often as desired.

Brush your teeth and clean your retainer

Keeping your  mouth clean does not necessarily remove the pain but it helps in preventing bacterial infecting that may worsen  the pain that you feel. So always brush your teeth, cheeks and gums, and keep your retainer clean.

Apply wax

There are wax products that dentist recommends to people who wear braces and retainers. This special type of wax for teeth helps in lessening the friction that may occur between your retainer wire and mouth. You can ask the dentist for more information about this product.

Avoid eating hard foods

Eating crunchy and rock-hard foods may aggravate the pain that you feel. In the meantime, instead of indulging with solid foods, try to eat foods that are easy to chew. Stop with the junk chips and eat foods such soups, yogurts or mashed fruits. The good news is that, when you are suffering from retainer pain, you can eat scrumptious ice cream.

Get some medicine

If the pain is really excruciating, you can take some medicine to counterattack the soreness. Simple pain relievers like ibuprofen can help in alleviating the pain that you feel. You can try consuming Alaxan, Advil, Tylenol or other similar medicines. Avoid consuming aspirin as this may cause your gums to bleed. If you are not sure what to consume, ask the health professional.

Go to the dentist

It is normal that you may feel pain from retainer for about a week or two. But if the pain worsens each day and you start to feel ill, then you should go to the dentist. You might already have contracted infection and it is best to take advice from the dentist.
