If warm salt water did not work, try gargling with cold water. The cool temperature can give you that numbing effect, hence the temporary relief from pain. Simply get some water and add some ice cubes to it. Let the ice melt and then gargle. Do this as often as desired.
Brush your teeth and clean your retainer
Keeping your mouth clean does not necessarily remove the pain but it helps in preventing bacterial infecting that may worsen the pain that you feel. So always brush your teeth, cheeks and gums, and keep your retainer clean.
