How To Get Rid Of Scratches On Glasses

Scratches on glasses are inevitable. If you use your eyeglasses regularly, then it is normal for it to have wear and tear like scratches. While some hairline scratches do not really affect your vision through your glasses, when they become excessive, scratches can cause another problem. So if you have eyeglasses, be sure to take good care of it to keep it scratch-free. But if you already have accidentally dropped or left your glasses to be scratched, here are some things you can do to get rid of scratches on glasses.

Clean with cloth

The first step you can do to reduce the amount of scratches on your glasses is to clean it first. Every prescription glasses come with eyeglass sponge or cloth. Just use this in order to clean up your glass lens. It is usually enough to take away dirt, thumb marks and little scratches.

Use cleaning solution

There are eyeglass lens solutions that you can readily get from your optometrist. You can just apply this cleaning solution using a piece of cloth with fine fibers. Just work on your eyeglass lens with the solution and most scratches will be most probably be removed. If you do not have cleaning solution for glasses, you can use CD cleaning solutions as an alternative.

Apply glass or metal polish

Glass or metal polish can remove minor scratches. Simply get a soft cloth or sponge. Use this to get a little amount of polish and gently rub it in circular motion against your glasses. You need to do this for a minute or two, depending on the depth of the scratch. If you notice that the scratch is getting less and less visible, just keep on applying the glass or metal polish until you have gotten rid of the scratches on your eyeglasses.

Use baby oil

If you do not have glass or metal polish, you can use baby oil as an alternative. This just works with minor scratches and may not be effective with severe ones. Simply pour one drop of baby oil on the lens and rub it with cloth or sponge.

Clean with toothpaste

Toothpaste is one of the best cleaners for glasses. All you have to do is smear white toothpaste on the eyeglass lens. Use paste or cream and not gel toothpaste. Then, using a soft paper towel with fine tissue fibers, gently scrub the surface of the glass in circular motion for a few minutes. Then, remove the toothpaste with a cloth dipped in water-vinegar solution.

Replace the lens

Heavy scratches and deep gouges might permanently stay on the lens of your eyeglasses. If the damage is already too much and the tips above do not longer work, then maybe it’s time to have your glass lens to be replaced. Go to your optometrist and buy new lens replacement.
