How To Get Rid Of Skunk Smell On Dogs

Dogs are very cool pets. They have this special characteristic that enables them to bond with their owners. They love to play and cuddle with their masters. But, what if your dog has been victimized by a skunk around your lot and left him smelling very unpleasant? Dogs that have been sprayed down by skunk are not really fun to be with. While dogs themselves are not too fragrant, if they have encountered a skunk, they will start to smell really bad – maybe even too bad that you’re bonding time will be skipped because you can take your dog’s nasty smell.

Do not make your pet lonely and sad. If your dog has been sprayed by a skunk, what you should do is to try to get rid of the smell so you can continue bonding with your pet dog. While removing skunk smell is not too easy, you should do it as soon as possible even before the skunk odor can stick to your dog’s skin and fur. To get rid of skunk smell on dogs, here are the things that you can do.

Bathe your dog

The very first and most effective thing that you can do to make your dog smell better again is to bathe it. While it may be a bit challenging to keep your dog still while you bathe him, you have to exert some effort if you do not want the skunk smell on your dog to spread around your whole household. To bathe your dog, get the necessary materials including: dog shampoo, conditioner, scrub, brush, some vinegar or lemon and lots of water, and your protective gloves.  Consider using shampoos on the market that cater solely to skunk smells.

Brush your dog’s fur

In order to avoid dealing with tangles after you have bathed your dog, you should brush your dog’s fur first. Just lightly brush down from his back down. Be careful not to tug too hard when you encounter tangles. You can also try to bribe him with a treat you he can stay still while you brush him.

Apply vinegar or lemon solution

The vinegar or lemon can help make your dog smell fresh. So if he really smells very bad, you can just mix some vinegar with water or make a lemon juice. Place this on a spray bottle and spray it to your dog’s fur. Leave it there for a few minutes, before proceeding.

Wash your dog

The next step that you should do is to wash your dog. You can either fill a tub or big basin with warm water or you can just use the shower head. When his hair has been washed, you can now apply the shampoo.

Shampoo your dog

Be sure that, before you apply the shampoo, your dog’s fur is wet all over. Then, squeeze some dog shampoo on your hand and lather it all around your dog’s fur. Massage the dog shampoo all around your dog’s body. You can also use brush for tougher cleaning. Afterwards, rinse it with warm water. Be careful when you are using shampoo on your dog to avoid accidents.

Use conditioner

After rinsing the shampoo, quickly apply some conditioner and wash thoroughly. Using a conditioner will improve the texture of your dog’s fur so that you will not have a hard time brushing his mane again. Plus, conditioners can also make your dog smell lovelier.
