How To Get Rid Of Wet Carpet Smell

Carpets are nice addition to any home. It can serve as a decoration that will make your house warmer and more welcoming. However, there are times when, instead of beautifying your home, it makes living uncomfortable. That is when something spilled on your carpet and left stains plus unwanted odors. When a carpet becomes wet, it will attract lots of bacteria that may cause unpleasant odor. Moreover, it may even cause molds and mildew to form, which are harmful fungi. Whether it poses harm or not, it is best if your carpet serve its real purpose rather than being an annoyance. Wet carpet smell must be treated and kept away as much as possible.

Once your carpet has acquired an unwanted, musty wet odor, simply washing it may not be enough. If you are facing the need to get rid of carpet smell, there are several methods that you can follow to clean it up. Of course, the effectiveness depends on how serious the smell is. But for starters, here are simple home remedies that you can do to get rid of carpet smell.

Try baking soda

As you may already know, baking soda is one of the top home remedies to a lot of problems you encounter in cleaning your household. It can kill bacteria, remove stains and unwanted smell. All you have to do is get a pack of baking soda and sprinkle it all over your carpet, or on the wet spot. Be generous in applying baking soda so it can work quickly. Using a brush, spread around the baking soda. Just leave the baking soda for a whole day to work and absorb the wetness and the odor. After enough time has passed, use a vacuum cleaner to suck up the entire baking soda residue. You can also use a broom to remove the baking soda. Afterwards, lightly brush the carpet fibers.

Use vinegar

Aside from baking soda, vinegar is another powerful material that is often used for home remedy. Its strong odor kills the odor-causing bacteria. If you need to use vinegar, simply mix some water and white vinegar and pour it on a spray bottle. Spray up the wet areas of your carpet. Be sure that the fibers are reached by the vinegar but do not let the carpet get saturated. After about 15-30 minutes have past, spray clean water on the area and use a cloth blot it. Afterwards, let the carpet dry. You can also place it in a clean area outside so it can bleach naturally under the sun.

Apply hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide can also work well in removing wet carpet smell. However, it cannot be used with all types of carpets as its concentration may damage weak carpet fibers. If you want to use hydrogen peroxide, apply a small amount of it on a part of the carpet to check if it will cause damage or not. If the carpet gets discolored, avoid the use of the hydrogen peroxide. But if did not do any harm, you can apply hydrogen peroxide directly on the wet and smelly areas.
